Human Skulls
To achieve the high level of skill necessary to convincingly draw and paint the portrait and figure a sound understanding of the skeletal and musculature must be acquired.
The beginning to intermediate student who wishes to master the human head would be well advised to first learn your portrait drawing skills by studying and practicing from the skull. Your goal is to fully ingrain the architecture of the skull into your subconscious mind and you do this by drawing the skull over and over again from every conceivable angle. The best figural artists do this constantly.
There are many plastic skull reproductions available, from the inexpensive novelty items to the quite expensive skulls for medical study that can be disarticulated (disassembled). I do not recommend practicing from a cheaper, novelty skull . These are inaccurately proportioned and poorly defined. They will do more damage to your skill development than help. The biggest problem beginning and intermediate drawing students have to overcome is the issue of symbolic preconceptions - drawing what you think a face looks like rather than what is actually there. Practicing from a cheap novelty skull will only reinforce your symbolic preconceptions.
To that end, we offer two skulls for artists that are accurately proportioned and articulated for a reasonably price. These are the skulls that I use in my studio and in my office. I find that by keeping them in constant view my unconscious mind continually studies them and reinforces my 'innate feel' for the underlying structures of the head.
