If you have been diligently focusing on mastering your drawing skills over the past year or two, as we recommend, now might be the time to add some color to your palette of skills and “get serious” about your painting.

No matter what medium or genre you specialize in, the whole crux of your work and it’s success or failure is dependent upon your understanding and application of three things: drawing, composition and color. I’ve said it before as have the great masters, but it bears constant repetition. Without these fundamentals as a solid foundation your artistic life will be built like a house upon sand and will never rise above mediocrity at best and you will struggle needlessly for years in disappointment and frustration.

Like most first-year traditional art programs we recommend getting familiar and sampling or even becoming competent in a variety of painting mediums and subject matter. For the realist painter this will generally include the Figure and Portrait, Landscape and Still Life, Composition and Color, using Oils or Acrylic and Watercolor. Acrylics can be used like both Oils and Watercolor, so methods you learn in these mediums can be applied for the most part to Acrylics. The reason studying the different genres is important because many still life or landscapes contain figures and vice versa so you don’t want to limit yourself by only studying one to the exclusion of all others in your training. If you read the past two month’s Velazquez lesson you will be impressed by his mastery of Still Life, Figure and Landscape and how almost all of his work had combinations of all three.

There is nothing worse than seeing a painting by an accomplished landscape artist for e.g. who suddenly tries to incorporate a figure in their work. You can tell immediately if they have never made a study of the figure no matter how good they may be as a landscape painter and it brings down the quality of the work immensely.

Eventually you will favor one medium and genre more than the others. But even if you are already well established in your chosen medium it’s always nice to take a break from your regular work and try something new which often leads to further development and inspiration, especially if you feel your work is stalling.

The Foundation of Painting Collection fulfills these requisites and more by giving you a complete course in Composition and Color and then studying the fundamentals of Figure, Portrait, Landscape and Still Life (composition) painting in the traditional mediums of Watercolor (figure and portrait), Oil (landscape) and Acrylics (color theory) with two professional instructors who are international masters at their craft. You will find that many of the principles work equally well in any medium.

The composition and color theory courses also introduce you to studying old and modern Master works in a variety of mediums and genres using many historical examples and analysis to help you gain a greater understanding and appreciation of what makes great art – great.
