PAINTING THE REALIST LANDSCAPE IN OIL
En Plein Air DVD

Paul Chizik

Painting “en plein air” or outdoors, is both a challenging and exhilarating endeavor and one of the most satisfying painting experiences for both the novice and experienced painter. Working relatively small and quickly, en plein air paintings capture an energy, freshness and vitality often lacking in larger scale studio paintings and have been recognized as one of the best training tools by the Masters for centuries.

In the great outdoors, painting is always an adventure and nature teaches us many valuable lessons that can’t be learnt in the seclusion and comfort of our studios. Here we are at the mercy of the elements, and our “model” is never still and so we learn to think and act fast. We must race the light, and chase our supplies, as a playful breeze dances around us. Inquisitive visitors of the human and insect varieties might drop in for a chat, and the weather can change at the drop of a hat. But nothing is quite like painting nature in all her glorious moods and trying to capture her elusive beauty on canvas.

Some of the world’s greatest masters enjoyed en plein aire painting to such an extent that their outdoor sketches are considered some of their most masterful work. John Singer Sargeant the reknowned portrait artist, was a master of outdoor painting. He started painting on family holidays as a boy with a paint box his mother gave him and it continued to be his greatest passion to travel and paint in every corner of the world. Many consider his outdoor watercolor sketches with their exquisite brush strokes and vibrancy of color to be equal to his finest and most arduously planned and executed studio oil portraits.

Certainly J.M.W. Turner the great British painter is another who loved the immediacy of working and sketching outdoors to capture the emotion he was trying to convey and in fact had himself very famously strapped to the mast of a ship in a howling storm at sea for hours, to experience the feeling and power he was trying to convey in what became one of his greatest works.

The French Impressionists took painting outdoors and portrayed for us the halcyon days of Edwardian/ Victorian summer picnics and parties in Paris pavilions, Degas sketched at the Ballet and horse races. Vincent Van Gogh and Cezanne painted bold new dashing strokes and dazzling colors, with flies and all still in the paint.

Rembrandt left us his exquisite ink sketches and Leonardo Da Vinci’s breakthroughs in modern perspective in art came largely from his new approaches to landscape painting used as backdrops in his portraits and figure work such as the Mona Lisa.

In this comprehensive 2 hour DVD workshop with master landscape painter Paul Chizik, many of the challenges of plein air are encountered and you will see how a professional painter handles working with nature. You will be taught:

About tools and equipment – everything you need to paint outdoors;

Palette management and colour selection – the best colors for classical landscape painting;

Choosing a site and composition;

How to distill the confusing panorama you see and decide on the most important elements to include in your painting;

Paul Chizik is an internationally renowned master artist of the Barbizon school of realist painters. His rich moody landscapes and powerful Narrative/ allegorical works and Still Life’s have garnered universal recognition and praise for their mastery of technique. Paul completed his studies in art at the Western Washington University and then travelled and studied art extensively in the great museums of the world with various masters and in particular with European realist master Michael John Angel in Florence and Toronto. He also studied at the Florence Academy of Art and at the prestigious Chicago Institute of Art. Mr. Chizik is accomplished in gouache, classical egg tempera, and watercolor painting but has a passion for oil which spans over 20 years and which he now works in almost exclusively both with his en plein air work and large studio paintings. One of his greatest talents is his rare ability and dedication to teach and train artists to the professional level from absolute beginner, and many of his small army of devoted students throughout North America are now professional practicing artists in their own right.
