Michael is a great teacher and a talented artist as well!!! He encouraged to go for my ideas and helped me realise it. It's a wonderful experience and if I have chance in the future. I would definitely want to learn oil painting again with Michael:))))

I had such a great time; I've never taken an art class before but Michael was very patient and helpful, and catered to every skill level. We started out the morning with a demonstration and then got started. Before I knew it, it was time for lunch!

All in all, I learned a lot, met some lovely people, and had such an enjoyable day - I'd definitely recommend this class and am already thinking about when I can book it again.

Oil Painting Techniques for beginners

Oil Painting Technique for beginners

Oil paint is the richest and most versatile means of expression. But if you don't know how to build-up and apply oil paint the result can often be a lifeless and dull result.

This one-day workshop is presented in three parts: first, is the underpaintng and blocking-in of the primary light/dark pattern. This pattern is called the Notan (meaning light/dark harmony) and is what 'sticks a painting to the wall'. If your Notan is not compelling, then unfortunately neither will be your painting.

Second is the Abbozzo which is the dead coloring in. This is the initial draft of your color harmony. When a painting looks dirty it is because the color is not in harmony. In this workshop we will be working with the two major color harmonies that make paintings glow.

Third is the Overpainting. The overpainting is the show! You will learn how to build up the abstract structural surface of an oil painting with brushwork, the palette knife and while learning about the seven contrasts that make for good painting.

The French Impressionist Eduoard Manet is the ideal candidate for learning how to paint. He is the bridge between Academic craftmanship and contemporary expression.

The surest and most efficient way to learn how to paint is by copying the great masters. You wouldn't want to learn music by only playing your own compositions; you wouldn't get very far.

You will copying one of Manet's final floral paintings at its actual size.

All materials are supplied. Included with the Workshop is Michael Britton’s Fundamentals of Oil Painting Ebook.

Class size is limited to 10.

Landscape painting class in Bangkok

Elements of Landscape Painting

Landscape painting is undergoing a major resurgence in art. The language of contemporary landscape painting strives to distill the complex array of trees, bushes, water, foreground, background, etc. into a succinct expression of spirit.

This one-day workshop is an excellent grounding for both studio painting and working en plein air (outdoors). You will learn how to quickly render a complex subject with dynamic brush strokes and color to achieve an oil painting that is as fresh as home-baked cookies.

You will be taught more advanced techniques such as fluting color passages so that your painting sparkles rather than lay flat and lifeless. Advanced composition will be taught plus how to use color pathways to lead the viewer's eye through the painting.

All materials are supplied and as an added bonus you will also receive Painting the Realist Landscape download video (approx. 2 hours).

Class size is limited to 10.

Portrait Drawing

Portrait Drawing

Learn how to draw realistic portraits in this one-day workshop. This intensive workshop employs the same tried-and-true classical method that is taught at the New York Academy of Art and Grand Central Art Academy.

You will be working from a master portrait drawing which is the most efficient way of acquiring your foundation skills. This is also how every master artist has begun their studies. Learning to draw from photographs is probably the worst way to learn as the result is inevitably a timid rendering of a photograph. The same is true when a beginner attempts to draw from life. Drawing from a live model should come later after you have acquired your basic portrait drawing skills.

All materials are supplied. Included with the Workshop is Michael Britton’s Fundamentals of Portrait Drawing (38 lessons).

Portrait Painting Workshop - Bangkok

Painting Portraits in Oil from A to Z

Learning to paint portraits from a photograph is a poor approach. The common tendency is for the beginning artist to emulate a photograph. The result is often a dry, lifeless work that, at best, mimics the language of photography.

The problem, too, for the beginner artist to draw and paint from life is that the tendency to mimic a photograph is overwhelming.

The French Impressionist Edgar Degas was an exemplary portraitist and continues to strongly influence artists today. In copying Degas' elegant portrait of Emily Daubigny, ideal for beginning artists, you will learn how to mix realistic flesh tones and model facial form.

In this workshop you will embark step-by-step through the three stages of oil painting - underpainting, abbozzo (dead coloring-in) and the overpainting.

The portrait sketch will already be done on your gessoed and oil-toned panel so no need to worry about the initial drawing.

All materials are supplied. Included with the Workshop is Michael Britton’s Painting the Portrait in Oil.

The pace of your step by step teaching was not too fast nor too slow. Also, the style of teaching and class was friendly.

I also like the relevant history you added from time to time along the workshop. It helps me understand the context more.

Your tips or guidance on how to paint professionally are very useful e.g not to copy but paint in our own language, comparing painting with piano playing makes me understand better about rhythm of painting, etc.

I always wanted to try painting but never got around to it until I signed up for this class. Now I'm hooked. Michael is both a very talented artist and teacher. He was patient and encouraging. Thank you, Michael.
