Painting workshop in Paris

Ignite your passion for art!

Ignite your passion for art in Paris! The moveable feast that is the City of Light is the premiere destination of artists the world over ... join them in these one-day painting workshop with International Master Artist Michael Britton. Stand in the foot-prints of Monet, Renoir and Van Gogh and paint the scenes that they did and create your own masterpiece.

Whether you are an absolute beginner or a seasoned pro you will gain innumerable insights under the knowledgeable and amiable guidance of Michael.

In these workshops you will learn how to begin your painting by blocking-in your composition with a paint brush, how to mix color and apply the initial coloring-in and how to build up the surface of the painting ... this is the patina and inspired color notes that make plein air paintings so charming.

The workshops are held on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays beginning at 10:00am (just behind Notre Dame on the bank of the Seine) and continue to 3:00pm, sometimes longer so that you can finish your painting.

All of your painting materials for the workshop are provided: paints, brushes, palette, easel, rags and painting smock. You only need bring sunscreen and a hat.

You will be creating on a 9x7" panel (sounds small but you will thank me at the end of the day ... even a small picture can loom large when you are intently focused) using quick drying, water-soluble oil paint that is nontoxic. The painting, of course, is your's to cherish forever and ever.

You will learn how to create an en plein air oil painting from start to finish via demonstrations and personal guidance from Michael Britton.

Group size is small and limited to a maximum of four.

And being artists in Paris we celebrate our artistic achievement with a glass or two of red wine and cheese. Just like the Impressionists!

What you can expect:

A few days before your workshop I will send you (via email or WhatsApp or Line) the details of our meeting place behind Notre Dame where I will be eagerly awaiting to greet you at 09:30.

The workshop begins at 10:00 and concludes at 2:00. But if you need some extra time to finish your painting no need to worry and rush. This is a labor of love for me.

In this workshop you will experience a day in the life of a Parisienne artist as you learn how to paint this remarkable city of light. You will be guided step-by-step through the entire process.

You will be painting in oils. This is the richest and most versatile of paints. Don't believe all the horror stories of oil paint: they are much easier to work with than watercolors and much more expressive than acrylics. And as long as you don't eat the paint or lick your brushes they are safe to use.

You will be using water-soluble oil paints (no turpentine or solvents!) with just a little bit of walnut or poppy oil. Your painting will be dry to the touch the next morning. Plus I provide you with a customized cardboard sheath in which to protect your easy-to-pack painting.

At the end of the day you will have achieved your own en plein air painting that is much, much more than a souvenir: it is a sentimental keepsake of your journey.

The Details:

All of your art materials for the workshop: oil paint, brushes, palette, smock, easels, mixing knife

Your 7x9" painting panel and cardboard sheaf to protect your painting for travel

Painting lesson in English by Michael Britton (both demonstrations and personal guidance)

Concluding glass of wine and cheese and convivial chatting.

Hotel pick-up and drop-off (you will be notified of our meeting place in Central Paris).

If it rains ...

Painting workshop in Paris

A special kind of light illumines Paris in the rain. Truly a painter's delight!

Michael has several spots where we will paint in comfort and stay dry. An extra glass of wine also goes a long way toward easing whatever elements might challenge us.

Michael is a great teacher and a talented artist as well!!! He encouraged to go for my ideas and helped me realise it. It's a wonderful experience and if I have chance in the future. I would definitely want to learn oil painting again with Michael:))))

I enjoyed your class so much that I had a high the following day and rushed to my brushes and palette!

This was my first time with oil painting and I really enjoyed. Mike demonstrated and talked about each step and then helped everyone individually. He is a very nice and patient teacher. I learned a lot about how to mix colour and how to draw with a paint brush. I am very happy with my painting and glad that I signed up for his class. I also enjoyed my Paris trip :) Thanks Mike

My daughter and I signed up for Michael's Paint Paris with a Master Artist after five exhausting days of exploring Paris and touring most of the museums. A quiet, meditative day of painting was exactly what I needed. Not only is Michael a teacher par excellence! but being able to paint alongside a very talented artist in Paris on a beautiful spot on the Seine behind Notre Dame Cathedral is a day to be cherished. We were joined by two lovely women from Thailand and the cultural cross-currents is exactly what I look for and enjoy in travel. Thank you Michael for a wonderful and memorable day. The apres-painting picnic on the Seine with wine and cheese and spirited conversation about art was a master stroke!

I had a great time painting with Michael. He took us to a beautiful spot on the Seine with a view of Notre Dame and briefly introduced some of the site’s art history. He has a lot of experience teaching painting to different levels and ages- I’m a beginner and it was perfect. He’s a nice and interesting person and a very good host for the afternoon. The lovely French wine and snacks topped off the experience.

I had such a great time on this experience; I've never taken an art class before but Michael was very patient and helpful, and catered to every skill level. We started out the morning with a demonstration and then got started. Before I knew it, it was time for lunch! We finished off our paintings and the afternoon with some wine while admiring our masterpieces - it was the perfect ending to a great day. I have to say as well, Michael thought of everything! He knew where the closest clean bathrooms were, had painting smocks available, and even packed up the paintings so they could be easily transported back home. All in all, I learned a lot, met some lovely people, and had such an enjoyable day - I'd definitely recommend this class and am already thinking about when I can book it again.

The pace of your step by step teaching was not too fast nor too slow. Also, the style of teaching and class was friendly.

I also like the relevant history you added from time to time along the workshop. It helps me understand the context more.

Your tips or guidance on how to paint professionally are very useful e.g not to copy but paint in our own language, comparing painting with piano playing makes me understand better about rhythm of painting, etc.

I have really grown with Michael's workshops - he demonstrates and walks his way through all the necessary skills and competencies with great patience & dedication. I have become more confident in front of the easel. Suitable for beginners & experienced alike.
